Columbus State Hands UDC 87-67 Defeat

Columbus, GA: December 18, 2006--- Junior forward Alton Hart led the Columbus State University Cougars to an overwhelming, 87-67, defeat of the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, today, in Columbus, Georgia. Hart pumped in 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds giving him a double-double for the game.

The Cougars had a run of 12 unanswered points at the 16 minute mark of the first half to bring the score to 22-11 before the Firebird’s Antwon Hawkins scored on a lay-up at 11:50 into the half. Columbus led UDC 47-31 at the half time break.

The Firebirds shot only 27 percent for the game compared to the Cougars’ 47 percent. The Cougars won the battle for the rebounds, grabbing 7 more offensive rebounds than the Firebirds. Columbus also hit 39 percent of their three-point shots compared to UDC’s 21 percent.

In addition, Corris Portis scored 15 points, grabbed two rebounds and made two assists for the Cougars. Columbus’s Travis Matthews added 14 points, 6 rebounds and made six assists.

Junior guard Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) led the scoring for UDC, getting a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds.  Junior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitchellville, MD) and junior guard Charlie Smallwood (Bowie, MD) each contributed 15 points
