UDC Firebirds on Seven Game Win Streak, Defeat Bloomsburg 56-50
Bloomsburg, PA: December 9, 2006—The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds (7-1) extended their win streak to seven games this afternoon, by defeating the Bloomsburg University Huskies, 56-50, in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. The Firebirds never trailed while going on to hand the Huskies (6-1) their first defeat of the season.
Bloomsburg went into the game against UDC ranked 21st in the country by the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll. This is tremendous win for the Firebirds, who are coming off a 2005-2005 season in which they won just one game in twenty-two.
UDC led 22-21 at the break and both teams shot 32 percent from the field for the game. UDC had a 10 point lead at 6 minutes in to the first half, but the Huskies came back to cut the lead to one as the half ended. Bloomsburg tied the game 46-46 at the 6 minute 30 second mark of the second half on a tip-in by Billy Bryan. UDC came back to break the tie 48-46 on a lay-up by Brian Adams at the 6:22 mark.
Junior guard Justin Walker (Teaneck, NJ)
paced the Firebirds with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists.
Charlie Smallwood, a junior guard from Bowie, Maryland added 14
points, 3 rebounds and 4-4 free throw shooting. Junior guard Willie
Shaw (Alexandria, VA) contributed a double-double of 12 points
and 18 rebounds to the win.
The Firebirds return to action on Saturday,
December 16, at 2 p.m., against Georgia Southwestern College in
Americus, Georgia.
