Firebirds Defeat Golden Falcons for 10th Win of Season

Washington, DC: January 16, 2007—In a fast pace, exciting home contest today, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds defeated the Felician College Golden Falcons 89-75 for their 10th win of the 2006-07 season.  With this win, UDC improved its record to 10-4.

Junior guard Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) paced the Firebirds with a double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists. Charlie Smallwood, a junior guard from Bowie, Maryland followed with 20 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists. Another junior guard, Antwon Hawkins from Mitchellville, Maryland added 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists to the winning effort.

UDC led 43-32 at the half time break on 46% field goal shooting (17-37), 16 of which were in the paint, while shooting 100% (6-6) at the charity line and making 43 % (3-7) of their 3-point shots.

The Firebirds came out in the second half with a hot hand, raising the score to 50-37 at the 16:38 mark on a dunk by Antwon Hawkins. UDC made 12 fast break points to Felician’s 1, in the second half. 

The Firebird bench contributed 23 points to the win compared to Felician’s 9 bench points.

Two Felician players scored 21 points each in the loss.  Michael Perrot had a double-double of 21points and 12 rebounds, while Sydir Mitchell scored 21 points and grabbed 3 rebounds.

UDC will see action again on Thursday, January 18, at 7:30 p.m., against the nationally ranked Union University Panthers. The Panthers defeated the Firebirds last week in Richmond, Virginia.
