UDC DEFEATS WHEELING JESUIT 66-63 FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON
Johnstown, PA: November 18, 2006-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Basketball Team defeated the Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals, 66-63, tonight in the second round of the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Classic in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to capture their first win of the 2006 season. The Firebirds shot 41 percent from the field and 56 percent from the free throw line to garner this win.
Junior guard Charlie Smallwood, II (Bowie, MD) paced the Firebirds with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD), a junior guard, dropped in 14 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and dished out 2 assists in the winning effort. Junior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitchellville, MD) added 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
Frank Petersen and Rasheed Cole (Surrattsville, MD) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Cole had a double-double (14 points and 14 rebounds) against West Liberty on Friday, and collected 12 rebounds in tonight’s game. Petersen was the high scorer against West Liberty (19 points) and second highest tonight with 14 points.
Rusty Wooten was the leading player for Wheeling Jesuit with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist. Ricky Yahn followed with 15 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
UDC, now 1-1 for the season, returns to action on Friday, November 24, at 5 p.m., for their home season opener, in the UDC Days Inn Thanksgiving Classic, in the Physical Activities Center.
