UDC Stunned in East Stroudsburg Tournament, Lose to Queens 75-77

East Stroudsburg, PA: December 7, 2007—Inactive since November 24, the UDC Firebirds Basketball Team found themselves a little rusty and lacking on defense this afternoon in the East Stroudsburg University Basketball Tournament in Pennsylvania, as they lost to Queens College 75-77. Prior to this win, Queens had not won a game all season and are now 1-5.

After a nip and tuck beginning, the Firebirds found themselves trailing the Knights 39-46 at the break. Queens had an advantage on offense in the first half, making 56 percent (15-27) of their first half field goals, 67 percent (8-12) 3-point shooting and hitting 80 percent (8-10) of their free throws. UDC, however, made 52 percent (15-29) of their field goals, 40 percent (6-15) 3-point shots and 50 percent (3-6) of their free throws.

Queens shot 50 percent (28-55)  for the game in field goals, 52 percent(11-21) in 3-pointers and 56 percent (10-18) at the charity stripe, while UDC made only 48 percent (30-63) of their field goals and 36 percent (10-28) of their 3-point shots.

Queen extended their lead to as many as 11 points before UDC closed to within 2 points, with 2:37 remaining in the game on a jumper by senior guard Justin Walker (Teaneck, NJ). Senior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) hit a 3-point shot with 17 seconds remaining to bring the score to with in 1 (76-75), but Queen’s Lawrence Young made a free throw  and UDC missed a 3 point attempt with one second remaining to end the game.

 Khaleef Allicott paced the Knights to the win with a game high 26 points, while Mike Liander added 25 points and Maalik Oliver contributed 14 points. Four UDC players were in double figures today, led by seniors Justin Walker and Frank Petersen, each with 16 points. Senior Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) added 15 points, and freshman Tim Ellison scored 12 points.

The Firebirds will play in the consolation game Saturday at 3 p.m.
