Munson and Herbert Share Men’s Basketball MVP for 2010-11
Junior guard Nigel Munson ( Graphic Design Major, Washington, DC ) and his running mate in the Firebird backcourt, Junior Brandon Herbert ( Sociology Major, Baltimore, MD) received the team's 2010-11 Co-MVP award at the recent University of the District of Columbia Athletic Awards banquet. The event was held at Maggiano's Little Italy in Friendship Heights, DC
Munson averaged 18.4 ppg while shooting 80% from the FT line. He also dished out 121 assists while only turning it over 46 times in 18 games. Herbert is clearly one of the best long distance shooters on the East Coast and used his offensive skills to average 19.9 ppg and 42% from the arc. This backcourt combo was hard to guard as UDC went 11 and 7 in their last 18 games and made it known that the team would be a force in this region of Division II for 2011-12.
Head Coach Jeff Ruland thanked his staff for all their hard work and relayed to those in attendance that he was proud of his team for " hanging in there and making the progress we made after going 1 and 20 the year before ". Ruland added: recruiting is going well and we look forward to being in the NCAA conversation next year". He also thanked Director of Athletics Patricia Thomas and all senior staff for their efforts in landing UDC in the East Coast Conference for competition in 2011-12. "It is an exciting opportunity for all of us" Ruland said. He also applauded 6-7 sophomore, Dyrek Jones ( Accounting Major, Brooklyn, NY ) for his improvement and looked forward to having him progress even more next season.
