Lander Defeats UDC 72-63 in Women’s Basketball Action

Washington, DC: December 3, 2006—When the Lander University Lady Senators started this afternoon’s game against the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds with a 7 point run of unanswered points, the die for a win was cast. It seemed no matter how hard the Lady Firebirds played, they were unable to overtake the slightly more aggressive Lady Senators. Lander shot 39 percent for the game while UDC made only 30 percent of their shots.

The score was tied twice; first 29-29 with 6 minutes left in the first half, then 33-33 with 2 minutes remaining in the half.  UDC went into the locker room with a 35-34 lead at the break.

Lander’s play in the second half made the difference, as they began to pull away from the Lady Firebirds and maintained the lead until end of the game. Tiara Good paced the Lady Senators to victory with a double- double, scoring 23 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Stephanie Ponds added a double-double of her own, scoring 20 points while grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out 5 assists.

Senior Jennifer Jones led the Lady Firebirds with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Freshman Gabrielle Richardson followed with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Tiffany Church added 11 points and 3 rebounds.

The 2-4 Lady Firebirds will see action, again, this week at home on Wednesday, December 6, when they take on the Davis & Elkins Lady Senators in the first part of a double-header at 5:30 p.m.
