Lady Firebirds Drop Davis & Elkins 64-60

Washington, DC: December 6, 2007—The Lady Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia had to re-group tonight to defeat the Lady Senators of Davis & Elkins College, after leading by as many as 18 points during the game. Once the Lady Senators figured out how to get the ball in down low to the basket they began to chop at the UDC lead and eventually tied the score, 53-53, with 3:50 remaining in the game.
Davis & Elkins then took a, 55-53, lead before UDC tightened up their defense and regained the lead, 56-55, with 1:50 remaining, and held on for the 64-60 win.

The Lady Firebirds led, 39-27, at the break after making 5-10 three point shots and 42 percent of their two point field goals. UDC shot 37 percent for the game, while Davis & Elkins made 36 percent of their two point field goals. Three point shooting made the difference for the Lady Firebirds as they hit on 41 percent of their shots, while the Lady Senators only made 23 percent of their three pointers.

Junior guard Ashley Alexander (Washington, DC) paced the Lady Firebirds with 21 points, and 8 rebounds.  Sophomore guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY) added 17 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Senior forward Jennifer Jones (Newark, NJ) contributed 8 points and 2 rebounds.

Junior center Courtney Pawlak (Pittsburgh, PA) led the Lady Senators with a double – double of 25 points and 13 rebounds. Senior forward Nikki Yokum (Seneca Rocks, WV) followed with 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

The Lady Firebirds are now 3-4 for the season. They travel to Wilson, North Carolina to play the Barton College Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, December 9, at 2 p.m.
