UDC Lady Firebird’s Women’s Basketball Team lends a helping hand at the Special Olympics

Washington, D.C. - October 24, 2007-- Joining a number of volunteers, parents, and staff of DC’s Special Olympics, members of the UDC Women’s Basketball team offered their time, help, and support towards a great cause. Held in mid October at Turkey Thicket Recreational Center in North East DC, the Special Olympics put together one of many all-afternoon programs, offering sports and recreational events for persons with intellectual disabilities. Students with special needs from different elementary and middle schools around the DC metro area were able to show case their athletic abilities in a number of events including shooting, passing, and dribbling.

Throughout the program, the Lady Firebirds supervised and ran events, were referees, bookkeepers, and scorekeepers for basketball games as well as being sideline cheerleaders. All while keeping smiles on their faces and maintaining the positive energy that is characteristic with the Special Olympics and its mission of increasing the self-esteem and confidence of its patrons through athletic competition. Sacrificing just a few hours out of their day to help out, the Lady Firebirds admit that it was well worth it and look forward to volunteering their time and assistance in other community activities within the near future.
