Big Shot Ends Winning Streak
Washington DC: December 3, 2007--The UDC Lady Firebirds were on cloud nine. After starting the season with five straight wins, the team was in a tough game with the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings. Despite trailing by nine at halftime, the Lady Firebirds fought back to take a three point lead with 2:22 left.
The Physical Activities Center filled with noise and excitement,
because it looked like UDC had awakened from its game long
slumber. However, the excitement became heartbreak as
Elizabeth City State University made the key plays down the
stretch, winning the game 55-52 and ending UDC’s five game
winning streak.
The game was decided on a three point shot from Elizabeth City
State University’s Cheniece Arthur with six seconds left. The
senior guard saved her only three point shot for when it mattered
most. The Lady Firebirds did their best to make a great
comeback. They (UDC) shot only 19% in the first half, while
allowing Elizabeth City State University to shoot 52%. The
size and athleticism of the Lady Vikings caused the Lady Firebirds
to alter many of their inside shots.
The second half began much like the game, with UDC missing lay-ups
and inside shots. However, the Lady Firebirds continued to
force Elizabeth City State University into turnovers which they
started to convert into points. Little by little, Elizabeth
City State University’s lead started to dwindle. UDC
cut the lead to four, 41-37 with 11:46 left in the game.
Elizabeth City State University tried to keep the Lady Firebirds
from scoring, but UDC tied the game at 49 with 2:47 left.
That set the stage for the final, frenetic two minutes.
Lillian McGill led UDC with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ashley
Alexander added 12 points while Nicole Cooper chipped in with two
three point shots. UDC shot 28% for the game, including 17%
from behind the three point line.
The Lady Firebirds(5-1) return to action December 8, against Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia.
