Lady Firebirds Drop Close Contest to Davis & Elkins Lady Senators 67-69

Elkins, WVA: December 8, 2007—Cara Waybright led the Davis & Elkins Lady Senators to a 69-67 win over the visiting University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds this afternoon in Elkins, West, Virginia. It was the second straight loss for the Lady Firebirds, who were held to 35 percent (24-69) shooting for the game.

UDC trailed the entire first half, which ended with the score at 41-33, and the Lady Firebirds making only 12 of 33 field goals, and 2 of 6 three -point shots.

The second half gave the Lady Firebirds new life as they fought their way back to bring the score to within 4 when senior guard Ashley Alexander (Washington, DC) was fouled and hit the second of two free throws, after missing the first, to make the score 66-62 with 24 seconds remaining in the game.

Sophomore Nicole Cooper (Ft. Washington, MD) hit a 3-pointer with 1 second remaining, but time ran out for the Lady Firebirds, dropping their record to 5-2.

Freshman center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) led the UDC scoring with 13 points and 9 rebounds, followed by junior forward Deyshia Williams (Camden, NJ) with a double-double performance of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Tiffany Church (Norfolk, VA) and junior guard Devaughn Hailey (Camden, NJ) each added 8 points to the total.

Waybright scored a game high 24 points for Davis & Elkins, while teammate Courtney Pawlak added 21.

UDC (5-2) continues their weekend road trip on Sunday, December 9, when they travel to Philippi, West Virginia to play the Alderson-Broaddus Lady Battlers. The Lady Firebirds defeated the Lady Battlers 59-52 at home on November 28.
