Lady Firebirds Defeat Alderson-Broaddus Lady Battlers Second Time this Season
Philippi, WVA: December 9, 2007— Freshman Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) led the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds to their second win of the season over the Lady Battlers of Alderson-Broaddus College this afternoon in the Rex Pyles Arena. McGill posted her fourth double-double of the season scoring a game high 26 points, collecting 15 rebounds, giving 2 assists and making 1 steal in leading the Lady Firebirds to the 69-53 win.
UDC took an early lead in the game but Alderson-Broaddus kept it close, with the first half score of 29-26.
The second half started much like the first, but after allowing Alderson-Broaddus to tie the score three times, and take two brief leads, UDC regained the lead with 4:50 remaining in the game and began to pull away for the eventual win.
Although the Lady Firebirds managed to make only 25 of 69 field goals, and 6 of 13 three-pointers, their salvation came in the form of 68 percent (13-19) shooting at the charity stripe, as the Lady Battlers amassed a total of 16 fouls. UDC also out re-bounded Alderson-Broaddus, grabbing 50 from the board to the opponent’s 28.
Junior guard Deyshia Williams (Camden, NJ) was UDC’s second highest scorer with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Junior guard Devaughn Hailey (Camden, NJ) and junior guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY) scored 7 points apiece in the win.
Chelsea Kuehner was the only Lady Battler to reach double figures, scoring 14 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Sonya Jones and Caitlyn Brown scored 8 points each.
UDC (6-2) returns to action on Wednesday,
December 12, at home against the Virginia State University Lady
Trojans.
