UDC Lady Firebirds New Year's Classic, January 2-3, 2008

Washington, DC--- The University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds Basketball Team tips-off 2008 with a New Year’s Basketball Classic January 2-3, featuring four NCAA Division II schools. The Columbia Union College Lady Pioneers (MD), Saint Augustine’s College Lady Falcons (NC), Saint Paul’s College Lady Tigers (VA) and the UDC Lady Firebirds are the Classic participants.

The Saint Paul’s’ Lady Tigers, a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, are 3-2 for the season and led by sophomore guard Juantele Cook (Upper Marlboro, MD) with 16 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. Senior guard Katrina Wright (Wichita, KS) is their second leading scorer with 13.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Saint Augustine’s Lady Falcons, who are 6-2 overall for the season, are also members of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. They are led by freshman guard Erica Knox (Atlanta, GA) with 16 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, and freshman guard Allison Sikes (Richmond, VA), who is averaging 13.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

The Columbia Union College Lady Pioneers, 1-9 for the season, is a NCAA Division II Independent team. They are led by guard Jada Richardson (Silver Springs, MD) with 20.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, and Jeaneen White (Washington, DC), who averages 9.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Freshman center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) provides the leadership for the NCAA Division II, Independent, UDC Lady Firebirds (7-3), averaging 15 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.  McGill posted her third straight double-double game last Saturday, against Mount Olive College (NC), scoring 26 points and collecting 11 rebounds.

Junior guard Robin Williams (Bronx, NY) is UDC’s second highest scorer, averaging 9.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. Junior forward Deshyia Williams (Camden, NJ) follows closely with 9.1 points and 6 rebounds per game.

Saint Paul’s and Columbia Union tip-off the Classic at 3 p.m., on Wednesday, January 2, followed by UDC and Saint Augustine’s at 5 p.m. Columbia Union will take on Saint Augustine’s  at 1 p.m., Thursday, January 3, with UDC and Saint Paul’s facing each other at 3 p.m. The UDC Physical Activities Center, building 47 on the Van Ness Campus will be the site of all games.
