UDC Women Fall to Glenville State, 60-55

Glenville, WV: December 7, 2008—Without their injured playmaker, Nicole Cooper (Ft. Washington, MD), the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Team could not sustain offensive consistency and lost to the Glenville State College Pioneers, 60-55,  today, in Glenville, West Virginia. Three Glenville players were in double figures led by senior guard Mallory Menendez with 19 points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Suzi Harvey and senior guard Christine DiSabato scored 13 points apiece to round out the scoring leadership for the Pioneers.

UDC led most of the first half, including by 11 points, but allowed Glenville to tie the game at 30, with 9 seconds remaining in the half on 36 percent (10 for 28) field goal shooting. UDC shot 36 percent (11 for 31) in the half. The teams went into the locker room tied at 30 at half time.

UDC opened the second half jumping out to a 12 point lead with 13:33 remaining in the game, but Glenville remained true to form with an 11-4 run to take the lead 54-53 with 4:55 remaining, and went on to claim the victory. Glenville shot 40 percent (21 for 53) for the game and converted 10 of 16 free throws (63 percent) at the charity stripe.

UDC sophomore center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) led the team with 17 points and 7 rebounds, followed by senior guard LaQuanda Brandon (Washington, DC) with 10 points and 4 rebounds.

UDC dropped to 6-2 for the season and Glenville improved to 2-3. UDC returns to the hard court on Wednesday, December 10, at home against Bowie State University at 6 pm.
