UDC Women Hand Davis & Elkins Second Defeat of Season , 88-51
Elkins, WV: December 6, 2008—The University of the District of Columbia Firebird Women’s Basketball Team extended their win streak to five today, defeating the Davis & Elkins Women’s Senators, 88-51, in Elkins, West Virginia. UDC jumped on Davis & Elkins at the start of the first period and didn’t look back, at one point opening up as much as a 21 point lead . It was Davis & Elkins’ second loss to the Firebirds this season, having fallen to them earlier during the UDC Classic in November.
Sophomore center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC), once again, led UDC to the win, notching her fourth double-double of the season by scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. She was joined in the double-double club by senior forward Deyshia Williams (Camden, NJ) with 14 points (12 in 1st half) and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Nicole Cooper (Ft. Washington, MD) pumped in 16 points (14 in 1st half), and senior forward LaQuanda Brandon added 15 (11- 2nd half) points to the leadership category as she and McGill (14- 2nd half) took over the scoring in the second half.
UDC Head Coach Lester L. Butler, Jr. said, “This being our first game after the Thanksgiving break, the team went out and played hard. They showed they are able to win consistently on the road. Lillian McGill played extremely well, while continuing to post double-doubles. I was especially pleased by the fact that the team collected 60 rebounds in the game. We will continue trying to win, by staying focused on the game at hand.”
UDC went into the half time break with a 45-27 lead on 43 percent field goal shooting, thanks to the efforts of Cooper and Williams. UDC shot 42 percent (37 for 89) for the game and 57 percent (8 of 14) at the charity stripe. UDC finished the game with a 37 point lead. Junior point guard Teonna Jewell led the Senators with 10 game points, and was the only member of her team to reach double figures.
UDC will see action, again, on Sunday,
December 7, against Glenville State College in Glenville, West
Virginia. With this win, UDC improved to 6-1 for the season, while
Davis & Elkins fell to 1-5.
