UDC Defeats Bloomfield, 58-46, Extends Win Streak to Ten

Washington, DC: January 29,2009—The 18th ranked University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women’s Basketball Team extended their win streak to ten games, and their season record to 16-2 tonight, as they defeated the Bloomfield College Deacons, 58-46, in the Physical Activities Center. Sophomore center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) paced the Firebirds to the win with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds (her 9th of the season).

Bloomfield dominated the first half hitting 42 percent (8 for 19) of their field goals, 50 percent (4 for 8) from beyond the arc, and 100 percent (8 of 8) from the charity stripe. UDC struggled through the half shooting only 38 percent (8 for 21) from the field, 0 percent (0 for 3) from three-point range and 100 percent (2 for 2) from the free throw line.

UDC played an entirely different game in the second half, mounting a 22 point turnaround while shooting 48 percent (14 for 29) from two point range, 43 percent (3 for 7) from beyond the arc, and 82 percent (9 of 11) from the charity stripe.  Meanwhile, they held Bloomfield to 28 percent (5 for 18) from the field, 0 percent (0 for 3) from beyond the arc, and 72 percent (8 of 11) from the free throw line.

Three Firebirds were in double figures for the game, including McGill. Also in double figures were senior guard Deyshia Williams (Camden, NJ), who scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds and freshman forward Stacy Griffith (Fredericksburg, VA) tallied 10 points and 2 rebounds.

Griffith ignited the second half UDC resurgence, scoring all 10 of her game points in the half. McGill and Williams tallied 8 points apiece in the half, and Nicole Cooper found her range, adding 7 points to the effort.

UDC shot 44 percent (22 for 50) from the field, 30 percent (3 for 10) from beyond the arc and 85 percent (11 of 13) from the charity stripe for the game.

Junior guard Malani Malik was the only Bloomfield player to reach double figures, tallying 10 points and collecting I rebound. Sophomore forward Nicole Hawkins and freshman guard Vanessa Lamison tallied 8 points apiece as the Deacon’s next highest scorers.

The, 16-2, Firebirds next host the Columbia Union College Pioneers on Saturday, January 31, at 7 p.m. Bloomfield, who dropped to 9-8with this loss, will face Wilmington College, also on January 31.
