UDC Women’s Win Streak Ends as They Fall to Chowan, 70-52

Murfreesboro, NC: February 9, 2009--The Chowan University Hawks defeated the No. 16 University of the District of Columbia Firebird Women's Basketball team, 70-52, this afternoon, snapping their 13 game win streak and giving them only their third loss of the season. The Firebirds seemed out of sorts as they shot a season low 32% (17-54) for the game.

Junior forward A.J. O’ Banion led the Hawk scoring with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.  Brittany Nicholson followed with 12 points, two rebounds and two assists. While only two Hawks reached double figures, the team as a whole shot 43% (24-56) from the field, 40% (4-10) from beyond the arc and 69% (18-26) from the charity stripe. Every single Hawk contributed points to the win.

Chowan led 31-23 at the break on 41% shooting from the field, while UDC shot only 32% as the Hawks capitalized on 10 UDC turnovers, converting them into 18 points. This was the lowest point total scored by the Firebirds this season.

UDC opened the second half by scoring 5 straight points. But it would it would not be enough as Chowan made several runs to open up sizeable leads, reaching as many as 21 points.
Center Lillian McGill (Sumter, SC) led the Firebirds in scoring with a double-double performance of 21 points, 10 rebounds and one assist. This was McGill’s 17th double-double of the season.

Senior Deyshia Williams (Camden,NJ) was the only other Firebird to reach double figures, scoring 13 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

UDC dropped to 19-3 for the season, while Chowan improved to 9-15. UDC  returns to action February 10, against Nyack College in Nyack, New York.
