Janelle Junior, Denikka Brent Represent District of Columbia in Firebird Classic All-Tournament Team
WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team, host of the two-day, four-team, Firebird Classic Tournament held on November 17th-18th, was represented by sophomore Denikka Brent and senior Janelle Junior on the All-Tournament team, which was announced after the conclusion of the tournament.
Brent (Mechanical Engineering – Chesapeake, VA/Booker T. Washington HS) averaged 19.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per-game in a 1-1 weekend for the Firebirds. She first dropped a career-high 28 points in a tough, 73-67 loss to Grand Valley St., and followed that up with a 10-point effort the next day in a 70-57 win over Florida Southern.
Junior (Administration of Justice – Riverside, CA/San Bernadino Valley College) led the Firebirds with 16 points in a victory over Florida Southern on Sunday, and she also scored nine points the prior day in a loss to GVSU. She finished with weekend averages of 12.5 points and 4.0 rebounds.
Grand Valley State, which won both its games against the Firebirds and Bowie St., had three players make All-Tournament honors. Those three were: Alex Stelfox (12.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg), Lauren Stodola (14.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg) and Briauna Taylor (19.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg). Taylor was also named the Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Bowie State, which split its tournament games over the weekend, was represented by Channel Mackey. The Bulldogs' point guard averaged 9.5 ppg and handed out seven assists. Also, Kirstin McIntyre represented winless Florida Southern on the All-Tournament team as she averaged 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per-contest.
