The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds basketball team returns to action for the 2009-2010 season under 6th year head coach and two- time Independent Collegiate Athle tic Association (ICAA) Coach of the Year Lester L. Butler, Jr.  The team finished their 2008-2009 season with a second straight Independent School Division II National Championship and a NCAA Tournament appearance with an overall record of 24-5. The firebirds also achieved precedence by being ranked as high as #17 in the nation, the highest ranking ever for the program. The 24 wins the surpasses the 21 wins by the 2007-2008 team and gives UDC a overall 45-13 in the last two seasons, not to mention a 19 home game winning streak which dates back to the 2007-2008 season

Since being promoted to head coach in 2003, Butler has changed both the perception and quality of the District of Columbia women's basketball program. Bringing stability, vision and a love of the game to the program, Butler has earned the respect of his opponents while establishing  Firebird women's basketball as a competitive force in Division II.

Butler began his coaching career at Virginia Union as a volunteer assistant while he finished up his undergrad degree working with the guards from 1996-1998. After graduating from Virginia Union, Butler served as Head JV and Assistant Varsity Coach at Bladensburg High from 1999-2001. Prior to becoming Head Coach he served as assistant coach for two seasons. He was responsible for travel, scouting, and working with the guards, preseason conditioning, academic coordinator, and various other duties. He also served as the recruiting coordinator and has signed an impressive four Junior College All-Americans, 2nd Team All- ICAA selection, and a 1,000 point career scorer in his short time at UDC.

A 1998 graduate of Virginia Union University with a degree in criminal justice, Butler played for legendary coach Dave Robbins and was key member of the Panther basketball program. He helped Virginia Union capture three straight CIAA Championships and make four NCAA Division II appearances. In 1996 Butler's senior season, he guided his team to the NCAA Division II Final Four. Butler finished his career at Virginia Union tied for most wins with a (107-14) won-lost record. Butler served as team captain from (1994-1996). 

A native of Washington D.C., Butler graduated from Archbishop Carroll High in 1992 where he earned All Metro honors and Honorable Mention All-American.

Coach Butler is a member of various organizations including the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and the Black Coaches Association. He resides in Upper Marlboro, MD with his wife, Chae, and their two children, Jatae and Sam.

Jaime Brown
Hometown: Harrisburg, PA

Title: Assistant Coach

Jaime Brown enters her second year as an assistant coach with the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds.  Brown transferred to UDC as a sophomore from Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA. As a former basketball player, Brown made a significant contribution to the UDC athletics program.   It didn't take long before Ms. Brown left her mark on the UDC athletics program.  In 3 seasons, Ms. Brown brought leadership, commitment, and dedication to the Lady Firebirds. Ms. Brown was #3 in the nation in steals among NCAA Division II schools, averaging 5 steals per game and also leading the Lady Firebirds in scoring averaging 14.8 points per game for the 2002-2003 season. During the 2003-2004 season Brown served as team captain and averaged 13 points per game.  The 2004-2005 fall sports season was canceled in a decision made by the president of the University in order to rebuild the program.

During the 2005-2006 season Brown began the season late due to administrative procedures relating to NCAA rules and regulations.  However, this matter did not stop her from becoming a 1,000 point scorer for the Lady Firebirds in just 3 seasons. 

Brown graduated with a bachelor's degree in administration of justice in 2004 and a master's degree in public administration from the University of the District of Columbia in 2006. Brown currently works at the University of the District of Columbia Cooperative Extension Service full-time as an Extension Agent. In her spare time Ms. Brown enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family.

Sean Hill

Title: Assistant Coach

Sean Hill enters his second year as an assistant coach with the University of the District of Columbia Lady Firebirds.  Hills' coaching experience spans over the last 5 years having served as a Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at Virginia State University (VA) (2003-2005, and a Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Alcorn State University (MS) (2005-2007) and  (2007-2008) as a Assistant Girls Basketball Coach at Archbishop Carroll High School (DC).

Hill also has instructed at several basketball camps in the last 5 years including the University of Maryland, Georgetown University, Rutgers University and Princeton University to name a few.

He holds a Bachelor of Science from Virginia State University (2005) and a Master's of Education from Alcorn State University (2007.

As an athlete, Hill was a letter winner in football at Clark Atlanta University for a season and Virginia State University for two seasons.

Coach Hill is a member of various organizations including the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and the Black Coaches Association.  He is single and enjoys watching sports and spending time with family and friends.
