Firebirds Look to Build on Momentum of Historic Indoor Season with Successful Outdoor Season

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia women's track and field squad will look to build on its momentum from its historic Indoor season that saw the Firebirds win the first ever East Coast Conference championship.

Collectively, the Firebirds racked up a long list of accolades this winter, including: six individual conference champions, 16 First Team All-Conference, four Second Team All-Conference, two All-East Region, seven NCAA Provisional qualifiers and one NCAA Championship participant. That NCAA participant was junior Shauna-Kay Creary, who became the first ever Firebirds to compete in the NCAA Championships in the Long Jump event.

With just 13 athletes, the Firebirds managed to pull off an improbable victory over one of the East Region's top teams (Georgian Court) by winning all but one event they entered and having multiple scorers in each of those events. District of Columbia has proven to be dominant in the conference (and the region) in all sprint and jump events.

The Firebirds are particularly strong in the 4x400M relay - the event which capped off University of the District of Columbia's ECC Championship. Head coach Alton McKenzie will continue to maximize the team's depth in that event by running two 4x400M relay teams (A and B).

District of Columbia will open the season at the Terrapin Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland on March 30th.
