UDC Women's Volleyball Hosts Tournament This Weekend, Opens Up Season With Four Games In Two Days

Washington, DC – The UDC Women's Volleyball team hosts four teams this weekend and opens up the 2011 season with four games over two days.   The UDC Women's Volleyball Tournament includes UDC, Goldey Beacom, Elizabeth City, LeMoyne, and Virginia State.  

The Firebirds open up the tournament on Friday at 12:00 pm against Elizabeth City College.  The Firebirds play back to back contests on Friday, as they play again at 2:00 pm against Virginia State.  Saturday's games feature UDC against LeMoyne at 12:00 pm and Goldey Beacom at 4:00 pm.


The schedule for the weekend's games is a follows.

Friday, September 2nd

10:00 am – Virginia State vs Goldey Beacom

12:00 pm – Elizabeth City v UDC

2:00 pm – UDC v Virginia State

4:00 pm – Goldey Beacom v Lemoyne

6:00 pm – Elizabeth City v LeMoyne

Saturday, September 3rd

10:00 am – Virginia State v Elizabeth City

12:00 pm – UDC v LeMoyne

2:00 pm – Virginia State v LeMoyne

4:00 pm – UDC v Goldey Beacom

6:00 pm – Elizabeth City v Goldey Beacom


UDC looks to build off an impressive 20-8 record in 2010 as they compete in their inaugural season in the East Coast Conference in 2011.  The team returns three players who were ranked in the top 50 nationally among Division II schools for Aces Served Per Set: senior outside hitter/ right side Mirella Nunes (8th) (Business- Sao Paulo, Brazil), junior outside hitter/ middle back Vanessa Garley (13th) (Business- Rio Rancho, New Mexico) and junior libero Grace Perilli (29th) (Economics-Lewisburg, West Virginia). Also returning is senior setter/ right side Grace DeMichelis (Political Science- Aurora, Colorado).

Head Women's Volleyball Coach Sheila Weaver on this weekend's tournament, "We are really excited to begin the season, and we are looking forward to seeing how we stack up against some very quality opponents.  We are grateful to the teams who are traveling to the nation's capital this weekend to play in our tournament, and we expect there to be great competition all weekend."

The games will take place in the UDC Gym in the Sports Complex (Building 47).  Admission to the UDC Women's Volleyball Tournament is free.
